How to take care of your eyes when cooking?

Cooking is a hobby for some, a real chore for others! When we cook, our eyes are not spared: onions that make us cry, heat that dries our eyes... Here are our tips for being a gourmet with perfect vision!

How to avoid crying when cutting onions?

It's well known that cutting onions can quickly bring tears to the eyes. Even though this step is very common, it's still very painful! If your eyes hurt when cutting onions, it's because of a biological reaction that occurs between the layers. Allyl sulfate, which is a chemical compound, is released as soon as you cut an onion. Its sulfur content makes it a gas that is aggressive to the cornea of the eyes...

- Cut the onion's roots: by removing the entire perimeter of the roots at the bottom of the onion with a knife or a peeler, you will get rid of the most concentrated sulfur.

- Refrigerate your onion before cutting it (15-20 minutes); it will sting less when you cut it.

- Hold a toothpick between your teeth while cutting, or a match, being careful to keep the red end of the match facing out.

Rubbing your eyes after touching an ingredient

When we cook, our hands come into contact with a variety of ingredients: chili peppers, onions, flour... Some are volatile, and all it takes is a breeze for them to land directly on your contact lenses. Rubbing your eyes is already a habit to break because dirt can get stuck under your nails, and your hands are never completely clean. When cooking, it is very important that your fingers do not come into contact with your eyes, especially if you wear Contact Lenses.

What should you do if you get food in your eyes?

- If you do not wear contact lenses, rinse your eyes with saline solution, thermal water spray, or fresh tap water.

- If you wear contact lenses, wash your hands thoroughly and remove them carefully. Rinse them with a contact lens solution.

Getting smoke in your eyes

When cooking, it's very easy to get caught in smoke from the food. When opening the oven, the escaping steam often burns the eyes and dries them out. People who don't wear contact lenses experience brief discomfort, or even fogging if they wear glasses. But if you wear Contact lenses, you may experience discomfort and dehydration.

How to prevent smoke from drying out your eyes?

- Start by ventilating the room well. When smoke fills the room, you can experience breathing difficulties and also suffer from dry eyes very quickly.

- When opening the oven, be careful not to position your face above the door opening. This will prevent smoke from going directly into your eyes.
